My Jewellery Trends for the Moment; Whats In
Purely for the sake of research and keeping up to date with what's in, I tend to go shopping to keep up to date with colour themes and trends - these are my latest observations. (That's my excuse anyway)!! Please note, these are only my opinions, and yours are much more important than mine.
At the present, my focus on new jewellery is in the following areas
Spring-Summer 2007
What I will be working on
One of a kind and limited edition jewellery (as always)
Its lovely to think you have the one and only piece in the world; you are never going to see someone else wearing it.
Mixed Metals
(eg, gold and silver, silver and copper etc). Done well, this can look great - its also a good way of hedging your bet between being a gold-person or a silver-person or a copper and gold person...you get the idea.
Copper
There is a trend for copper at the moment....why? Well, primarily its cost related - silver has shot up in raw price over the past couple of years - and yes, the price of copper has increased too but like the comparison between the price of silver and gold, the price of copper and silver is never going to be the same. I'm never going to bring myself to use anything other than silver or gold or gold-filled or Vermeil earring fittings - but copper is a lovely metal and it makes a radical difference to the appearance of jewellery. You can expect copper to darken over time; where it is rubbed the original copper colour may still shine through, but it will darken - but its an interesting new area and one I willl use a bit in my jewellery - the findings though will probably stay in silver or gold. I dislike intensely using plated base metals because it just doesnt seem worth making jewellery in something that is going to rub away after a few wears. This does not apply to gold-filled metals which is in another league - I've had gold-filled jewellery for years and its never rubbed away yet.
Rose/Dusty Pink
A colour I first noticed in 'Coast' - gorgeous with the silvers and grey and browns of this season. Yummy. Such a flattering shade for all skin tones.
Pink and Pink and Pink
Its still with us....and still flattering. A few years ago when I opend my wardrobe doors all you saw was a blaze of pink - in fact my husband Mark said that if I ever went missing and he needed to tell the police what I had been wearing when he last saw me it would be pink. These days I tend to wear less of it and more aquamarine - because all those clothes got too big when I lost piles of weight in 2006!
Silver and Grey
Another big feature in 'Coast' and also in John Lewis at present, not a hard slate grey or silver but a true silver or soft grey. Lovely.
Aquamarine and Turquoise
Been with us for a while, lovely for spring and summer - great with copper and brown. I have to admit to a personal bias for aquamarine as it is my birthstone colour.
Teal Blue
Lovely colour with current silver greys and browns. Swarovski Indicolite colour is lovely in this range. Fab with brown or blue.
Greens and Greens and Greens
Loads of Green in the shops at the moment. You either love it or loathe it. My thoughts are that I am currently undecided....I'll get back to you on this one. It is in fact a fairly difficult colour because whilst you can be sure that grey or pink would suit you, green is such a variable against skin tones and computer monitors that it can be difficult to gauge. I'm coming round to it - try 2010 for further comments.
Assymetrical Jewellery
Again, a personal preference because it makes jewellery doubly or trebly useful - perhaps one side is wired with pearls, the other side is of silk, there is a pendant in the middle and a gorgeous clasp at the back - choose to wear it any way you want, lots of different looks for one price.
Brights I Will Go Near....
Jeweled colours that look wonderful together - eye catching bird of paradise colours in small quantities - you only need one piece not an entire ensemble of jewellery, clothing, handbag, make-up and shoes in clashing colours...tone down bright jewellery with a classy soft grey or neutral brown and you won't look like a christmas tree.
Beach Style Jewellery/White
OK, I confess I made this one up - but at the moment i love coral and mother of pearl, pearls and the Swarovski starfish and shells and the silver starfish and shells and fish and things....probably down to my Piscean roots.....and white coral or pearls or white cotton jeans are always great for summer every year anyway.
Silk
Lots of clothes in luxurious fabrics this year....beautifully made and in gorgeous draping shapes - so I am going to use silk too in my work - mostly because its beautiful and lovely to work with; embellished silk cords you can tie onto your wrist or neck rather than using a clasp.
Brown vs. Black?
For years I shied away from brown...having been a teenager through the Eighties, I would never have considered wearing brown....something to do with having associated the colour with the seventies which teenagers disparaged at the time....! However of late I have to say I have softened towards brown and I can see it does have its uses....actually, I have not just softened but realised its lovely with so many things...so yes, you can have brown or black...after all this is the new millennium. I even bought some brown boots recently. Looks great with silver grey and teal blue or aquamarine/turquoise too.
What I won't be working on and the illogical reasons why
Greens and Greens and Greens
Loads of Green in the shops at the moment. You either love it or loathe it. My thoughts are that I am currently undecided....I'll get back to you on this one. It is in fact a fairly difficult colour because whilst you can be sure that grey or pink would suit you, green is such a variable against skin tones and computer monitors that it can be difficult to gauge. I'm coming round to it - try 2010 for further comments. ( I do however like Olivine, which is great with most skin tones.)
Brights I Won't Go Near (imagine wearing these colours together)
Colours that clash and ostentation - like hideousities like green and orange together; I know I am contradicting myself (see above) and that this is a big trend in the shops now....but its a bit too reminiscent of the Eighties for me...I feel its not something that is going to last more than a few seasons....I would hate to think that something you've bought is going to have a short shelf life, so I am not planning on making scary jewellery.
Enormous and Plastic Jewellery
I see there is a trend towards absolutely huge, plastic beads and jewellery - great if you like this sort of thing, but I very rarely use plastic in my jewellery; the only reason this large sized jewellery is wearable is because it is made of plastic (otherwise you'd sink through the pavement) - I know a lot of people like this trend, but my jewellery tends to be daintier and more involved, and so giant jewellery will not feature on the site.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The only absolute rule is - wear what you love - there should be no such thing as being a slave to fashion; be comfortable with yourself, buy the clothes and accessories you like and what you feel you are going to love for years to come.
Please note, these are purely my opinions, and yours are much more relevant and important to your own style.
